I get "An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: /o connection limit exceeded." Time Warner tells me the trouble does not lie with them.

Maybe the people at Time Warner should spend a little time checking their own docs related to error messages and rate limiting, such as this one. At first glance, the only thing you would be responsible for is accepting a reverse DNS lookup for a hostname, but I don't think you can do much about that.

However, you could have a look at this support question and related mozillaZine links (the KB is currently down for some reason). In short: in case you are using port 25 to send mail, change the SMTP server to use port 587 (more info). Also make sure to check AVG's settings (when installed), or any other security software setting related to outbound email scanning.

Also keep in mind that it may just be temporary, i.e. it may be caused by your ISP after all without them being aware of it.
