Back button does not go to previous page
For the last few times I've allowed Firefox to upgrade - one or more new Firefox problems starts.
Now when I open a webpage from Google's search list of available related web sites; the back button will go back to previous pages within the site - BUT - will not leave the site and go back to the Google search page. Why??
I tried to follow your Mozilla Help topics - but they did not help and were hard to follow - especially trying to figure out about 5 or more pages of random possibilities.
What can I do to fix this problem?

Do you have the problem that you can see the address change in the address bar back to Google, but the page in the tab didn't change to match?
That started happening to me recently. I notice it when I:
(1) Launch a new blank tab (2) Type in the address bar, arrow down, and load a results page from an earlier search.
There seems to be some glitch where Firefox can display that page initially, but can't properly go back to it after I follow a result.
If I go back and see the wrong content and click the reload button in the address bar to force Firefox to re-fetch the results page, then it's fine after that for those results.
I haven't researched in depth what Google might have changed or Firefox might have changed that is causing the cache not to work normally in that scenario. (Also, I have heavily customized my Firefox, and haven't tested in a clean profile.)
Is that where you see an issue or does it come up in other circumstances?

Where is that list on your Google results?
