How can I stop Firefox asking me if I want to remember passwords without stopping Firefox populating the password boxes I have already remembered?

I have a number of saved passwords. I am happy with that. I do not want to add any more. I do not want to be asked if I would like to remember passwords but if I uncheck the box in Tools --> Options --> Security then my already saved passwords do not appear when I log in to the respective websites.

How can I have my cake and eat it, keeping the passwords I have already saved appearing on cue but not getting the pop-up question box any more?

Thanks

The only way I know to achieve this is to run Firefox in private browsing mode, but that would disable history.

Otherwise you would only have to enable the Password Manager when you need to log in to a website of which you have saved a password.
