I cancelled today's update because it said it was incompatible with Lightning Add-on (calendar)

I use Thunderbird and the Lightning Add-On as the nearest affordable equivalent to Outlook since Microsoft now charge excessively to include Outlook in Office. That means I use the Calendar and all its functions alongside the Email application. That in turn means that I do not want any update to Thunderbird that is incompatible with the Lightning Add-on. Can Mozilla not update both at the same time? I will not install any update that renders the calendar functions unusable. How can I know that an update will work properly with the Lightning Add-on? How can I ensure data in the Calendar (Lightning Add-on) is not lost? Can I roll back updates if something goes wrong? In sum, why not integrate Lightning and Thunderbird as one single application, and update it as such? Up to now, I have liked Thunderbird, and would like to keep it up to date. Please make doing so user-friendly. Current version is 38.7.2.

In sum, why not integrate Lightning and Thunderbird as one single application, and update it as such?

As of Thunderbird 38 this is the case. I.e. there is always a compatible Lightning version, and the Lightning update happens along with the Thunderbird update. The warning you see may be a little confusing in that regard. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-calendar-integration

How can I ensure data in the Calendar (Lightning Add-on) is not lost?

Even if something goes wrong with the update your calendar data will not be lost. Having said that, it is good practice to create a full backup of your Thunderbird profile prior to an update anyway, as well as on a regular basis. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Backing_Up_and_Restoring
