My remember user name and password is turned off and I cannot check the box in the security panel. How do I turn it on?

You could check whether automatic private browsing was turned on. I'd start here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools) > Options
In the left column, click Privacy. If the selector on the right side says "Firefox will: Never remember history" change that to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history"
Then check: is there a checkmark in the box for "Always use private browsing mode"?
If Yes: There's the problem.
If No: Could you check this next:
Open the Properties dialog for the shortcut you use to start Firefox. Either:
- right-click a desktop shortcut
- right-click a pinned taskbar icon, then right-click Mozilla Firefox
Normally, the Shortcut tab is selected automatically but, if not, click the Shortcut tab.
For 32-bit Windows, the Target line should be no more and no less than the following:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If there is anything after that, does it mention "private" or similar?

Is it possible that you are operating Firefox in its automatic private browsing mode? In that mode, Firefox's password manager is disabled. (See second section of the article: Usernames and passwords are not saved)
If you prefer to use private windows, you might find an add-on to be your password manager. There are many... some are compared here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_password_managers
That button was working a few days ago and I must have done something that caused it to go off. I need to know how to turn it back on. Thanks for the reply. Okie
