Tags apprear to no longer be available for selection when creating an email.
Since a recent update the ability to add a tag to an email as it is being created has disappeared. For years I have used the Tag Toolbar add-on from the Write email form to assign tags at the time of composing an email. This Tag Toolbar still appears and allows tags to be selected, but following sending the email, the tags do not show as selected on the email. A draft of a new email also does not show any selected tags upon opening the draft.
Running in Safe Mode, the Tag Toolbar no longer shows, which is how it should work, but a tag cannot be selected as an assignment to an email. I have also tried this from new installations of Thunderbird, and the tag feature is not showing up as being a feature available during the composition of an email.
Has this feature been deprecated, or will it return in a future release?

I'm also experiencing the same issue.
I have sent an email to the author advising of the issue. Perhaps you could do the same to get the authors attention on this issue.
Thunderbird is not responsible for any addons people choose to use, so it is up to the authors of the addons to make sure they are compatible with the various version of Thundebird.
Thank you for your follow up and for sending an email to the author of Tag Toolbar. I thought that the feature of adding a Tag during the composition of an email was possible in an earlier release, even if the Tag toolbar extension was not installed. I have now looked an an earlier Thunderbird release, being 24 as opposed to the current 38.1, and the ability to add a tag at the composition of an email does not appear to be an option.
Whatever changed as of a recent release to not allow the assignment of a Tag by the Tag Toolbar to carry through to the sent email, will hopefully be able to be addressed by the creator of Tag Toolbar.
The issues tracking system for the Tag Toolbar extension is: http://hogi.sakura.ne.jp/hiki/?IssueTrackingSystem
Under this system, the following issue was posted by another person about the same issue that I reported above: http://hogi.sakura.ne.jp/hiki/?Ticket-286
Hopefully the extension developer will be able to address this issue with a new release.
