OSx 10.10.3, FF 39. The problem started when I updated to FF 39. Preferences are set to preview PDF in FF. Also tried preferences set to Adobe Reader. Still get a new empty tab.

Try to reset your Application Settings: Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files
