Hi, when I try to open an attachment most times it does not work. I do not get an error message, but a window blinks instantly (i cannot read what it says, it might be the "download" window from the shape and nothing happens, the external application does not open or leads the file (if opened already). I have to save the file first and then I can open without any problem. This issue is not specific to any file type. If I try to open a file several times at some point it might work.

Thanks!

Is this an iMAP mail account? do you have the option to not store messages for this account on your computer set?

Hi Matt, thanks for your support. No it ins a POP3 account. The files are in fact on my computer (if i save them from the mail message to a position in the PC it works, even if I am offline), but most of the time opening DIRECLTY them from the client does not work. Thanks again Giacomo

What Anti virus? Sounds to me like it is messing things up when the attachment is written to the temp folder immediately before it is given to the operating system to open.

I have McAfee. I have disabled in the past the "real time scanning" for attachments. (http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS101490).

Thanks again.

McAfee the Thunderbird wrecker we should call that product. It has been causing problems with Thunderbird for around three years making Thunderbird look bad. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee

I suggest you try restarting Windows 8 in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8
