I have a 64 bit system and unable to download any dictionary from the Thunderbird installation programe. It informs me that the 32 bit Dictionaries are incomparable. What do I do to get a dictionary so as to run spell checker.

Terry

terry I have had trouble with the Aussie dictionary on and off for years. Do you get an issue if you choose the British (my backup choice) or US versions?

A screen shot of the error message might help also, so we can see exactly what you are.

Thunderbird is a 32-bit application. However, 64-bit Windows 7 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. What dictionary are you trying to install (link)? What is the exact error message?

The dictionary's here are not specific to OS being being 32-bit or 64-bit. https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/language-tools/

There is no Win64 version of Thunderbird unless you are using a third-party build or built it yourself as Thunderbird for Windows from https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ is Win32.

Hi, I go to tools, composition in Thunderbird and there is no dictionary listed in the box. I click on the bottom right hand section to add more dictionaries. It takes me to a window that has many dictionaries listed. I select English (Australian)Dictionary. It tells me that it is going to download the dictionary directly to Thunderbird, then it tells me it is a 32 bit program.I can only save it to my hard drive. I have transferred it to the Thunderbird folder but it still wont recognize the file. I am running windows 7 as my OS. What can I do?

Having re read my reply, I have incorrectly said that I click on the blue italic command to add my dictionaries on the bottom right of the screen. I should have said bottom left. Sorry

You need to save the .xpi to disk and install it in Thunderbird, not open.

From the extension pages in https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/extensions/ How to Install in Thunderbird

Download and save the file to your hard disk.
In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu.
From the options button next to the add-on search field, select Install Add-on From File... and locate the downloaded extension and open to install.

Hi Guys, I am 70 year old man trying to understand how I can install an English - Australian dictionary to Thunderbird in Windows 7 64 bit OS. You all have given me information that I don't understand. I'm looking for "Add-on" in Options men. Can't find it. Please, can you give me info and directions that I can follow? Remember I'm not as computer savvy as you guys. Could you please make your instructions a little easier for me.

Thanks

Terry

Just close the compose windows and your menu will have the entries the guys talk about. If your main Thunderbird screen does not have a menu, press F10 and one will be displayed.
