I was getting tabs opened telling me to update software - like firefox or adobe. scanning with malwarebytes & norton found nothing. decided to uninstall & reinstall firefox. running windows 7 home premium with service pack 1. 8gb memory on an HP dv6 laptop.

went to mozilla website, downloaded & was asked if i wanted to save or run. I chose to save. opened the downloaded file & said yes, I wanted to allow it (firefox stub installer) to make changes to my system. Answered yes & NOTHING happens. Firefox does not install.

It is possible that an anti-virus or firewall program is stopping Firefox from making changes to your computer. Please ensure that Firefox is allowed to install.

Some users prefer to disable their firewall and anti-virus during the install.
If you choose to do this, please remember to reactive it after the installation is complete.

If disabling your firewall and anti-virus doesn't help, please try downloading an older version of Firefox from here.

Important: If the installation process completes, update Firefox before browsing the internet.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
