Firefox keeps on changing pages, even yanking minimized pages back onto the screen and changing them, even though I have Firefox preferences set to always open new pages to accommodate links on a page or bookmarks.

I don't want Firefox to tamper with any pages, period. If I have a pages minimized, no way should Firefox be yanking that page up back onto the screen because it's "too lazy" to open up a new page to accommodate a bookmark or link clicked on.

It's extremely aggravating to click a link on a page, get a new page then, when I click the page to close it I find no page underneath, indicating that Firefox had changed the original page rather than open up a new page automatically to accommodate the link, etc.

What's the point of me in Firefox preferences setting it up for Firefox to open up new pages automatically when afterwards it doesn't?

P.S. I was unable to drag a page from the original page. It stays in one piece. Further, having to click at the top to get the tabs isn't much simpler than simply each time manually opening a new page.

You said you never saw anyone else complaining about Firefox not automatically creating a new page to accommodate links and bookmarks. I'm surprised about that, given the fact that all other browsers I've used did. And I don't see what made Firefox engineers alone think it wasn't more efficient to program their browser to automatically create new pages each time a link was clicked on.

Looks like I'll take the "lazy man's route" using Camino as my main browser from now on. Thanks for trying to find a solution, even if none was available.

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.
Links that do not specify a target usually open in the current tab unless there is some JavaScript involved.

For links that do not specify a target use a middle-click or hold down Ctrl and left-click the link or use the right-click context menu to open the link in a new tab or window.

This applies to bookmarks and other links as well, i.e. you can middle-click the View Image item in the right-click context menu of an image or middle-click the Reload button on the location bar to get a new tab with that link.

Tab Mix Plus doesn't work. I installed it, closed Firefox and opened a new session to test it. I had 4 tabs opened. I clicked on the 3rd tab to make it current. If I were using Netscape, I could left click on the bookmark for my local weather page and it would put the page in a new tab between the original 3rd and 4th tabs. Instead, it overlaid the 3rd tab with my weather page just as Firefox normally does. I need to find the code to fix it since all browsers are defective with this process. An easy fix was worth a try. Too bad it didn't work. My thanks to jscher2000.

Did you check the box to open Bookmarks in a new tab? See right side of screen shot here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/935121#answer-361552

I accidentally solved the problem myself. In the preferences a box was checked. I changed it, and now everything is cool.
