Its really weird but I cannot seem to figure out how to open and read a mail from a list of results from a search of emails.

I search for a word - I get a list of emails. I then try to open the mail by clicking on the topic line (the one that is in bold in the list). However, then only a blank tab appears. No content of the mail. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like reality and your search index are not the same thing. Try rebuilding it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database
