How can I make the date format for e-mails agree with my OS?

I use Thunderbird 60.0 on a mac (High Sierra) and the "date" column for e-mails is in the American format, even though my system uses the European format. I have read elsewhere that the two formats are supposed to agree. Can you tell me how to fix this? Thank you in advance.

Sorry, power of posting. There is an option for regional settings in Preferences>General. After restarting, the issue was resolved.
