How can I set this to open whenever I try to access it. I receive this every time I try to open the link and now (with the updated version of FireFox) I am not able to find the link to let it open. Real bummer.

I think both .dmg and .pkg files are handled by MacOS X, not Firefox. So whatever settings and error messages are involved likely are determined by the system.

Regarding the location of a downloaded file, can you view the downloads list and use the "Open Containing Folder" button? See: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox (it's the folder icon on the right side of a successful download that hasn't been moved to a new location).
