Mozilla stopped working more than a year ago. I've been emailing via my ISP website. On opening Mozilla I get message: "Outgoing server (SMTP) Password Required". I don't know what this password is. Another message tells me to send a new password. Then I get "Error with account (my email address)....Mail server pop.ntlworld.com responded: [AUTH] authentication failed".

I'd be very grateful if someone could explain as if to a 5-year-old what I have to do to get started again.

In the account pane in the left of Thunderbird, right click on one of the accounts listed and select settings.

Pick the correct account in the account settings dialog and select server settings. Change the server names, ports and anything else really to those in the linked page. Now scroll to the bottom of the accounts settings list and select "outgoing server (SMTP) pick you correct account in the SMTP server listed and again change the details to match the web page linked.

Based on your old server name, I would say you need to use the POP settings for your Thunderbird install

While this is a 2017 change I have linked to. I think I recall a similar disruption some years ago when Virgin changed things.

Thank you very much for looking at this. Unfortunately it hasn't worked, I'm sure due to my ignorance and incompetence.

Firstly, I assumed from your reply that I should ignore the instructions about IMAP4 settings. I hope that's right.

I entered pop3.virginmedia.com as the Server Name. Then problems. "POP3 SSL Enabled" - no option provided in my settings. "POP3 Authentication Enabled" - no option provided. "POP3 SPA Disabled" - no option provided. Connection options provided: SSL/TLS; None; STARTTSL. Authentication options: Normal Password; Encrypted password; Kerberos/GSSAPI; NTLM.

In Outgoing Server settings I added smtp.virginmedia.com and set it as the default ( a guess). Then: "SMTP SSL Enabled" - no option provided. Connection security options are: None; STARTTLS; SSL/TLS Authentication options: No Authentication; Normal Password; Kerberos/GSSAPI; NTLM; OAuth2

I don't know which of all these options to pick. I tried some of them and tried sending an email and this came up: "Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.ntlworld is unknown. Server incorrectly configured.... " etc.

Sorry to be such a bore but I'd really appreciate further advice.

Thanks again.

well the smtp error is easy, looks like you left the .com bit off the end of the name. at least that is what the error says.

The pop settings would look like this.

Thanks for that. Did I mention my age for technology purposes of 5 years?

I'm now getting
"Enter your password for [email protected] on smtp.ntlworld.com:"

I never used to have to use a password for emailing. Is it necessary and if so how do I find what it is or set one up?

the password will most likely be the same one you use on their web mail server.

Brilliant. All fixed now. A million thanks for your patience.
