Have been using a Hotmail account using IMAP on Thunderbird for a very long time without problems. Then BANG. 2 a.m. and it refuses to work. Message from TB is "Server xxxx has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem."
Googled problem, lots of people seem to have it. Generally involves connection cache limit. Set on logging - you see the result above. Connection cache limit. Set it to 1. No help.
Contacted Microsoft Support. They were absolutely ***** useless, just making the assumption that the error lies between keyboard and chair. They had me remove the account from TB and recreate it. Which it won't, as it bangs up against connection cache limit. They say Thunderbird problem and refuse to help further. Please help.

The problem may be the number of simultaneous connections to the server with multiple devices.
This person had a similar problem, and found it had to do with their iPad/IPhone: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1130345

No. Done all this, easy enough to find this information. Problem persists.
But thanks, Bruce, for trying to help! I would welcome someone coming up with a solution that works for me....!
Do you see the same for outlook.com addresses, if able to test any? Despite the error message, are you aware of other issues for hotmail.com addresses not being able to log at all in lately?
Tonnes No - I have several hotmail accounts, only one of which had this problem. The account was accessible via web browser and Outlook for Android, but could not be accessed via Thunderbird/IMAP or Outlook/IMAP.
There was a global problem, which MS has only reluctantly being admitting to, affecting many thousands of accounts which underwent a botched platform migration, starting on the early hours of Friday morning GMT. See https://disqus.com/home/discussion/downdetector/outlook_down_current_outages_and_problems_down_detector/#comment-3014088832 for instance.
The problem has now been resolved.
Not a Thunderbird issue, but an MS one.
