How can I get two sites (for instance, my email and one of my documents) side by side on my screen so I can easily hop back and forth between them?

When I click on the split screen icon it just puts the two on top of each other, always covering part of the underlying one.

Open one window. Then change its size, shape to cover 1/2 the screen. Then open the other window and shape it to cover the other half.

When I open two windows they overlap each other. I don't know how to get them to appear side by side.
