If I use the new sync-function, I keep losing my bookmarks or at least some of them during syncronisation. Is the new sync just as bad as the old one?

Just like with the old version of Firefox Sync I keep losing at least parts of my bookmarks when I'm using the new Sync version. Anytime I change any of my bookmarks on one of my computers, I not only miss the change on other computers, but I also loose parts of the original bookmarks as well. To me it seems that the new Sync is no better than the old one?

HI uglingclan, I think the new sync has improved. Currently bookmarks are merged when the next sync completes on each computer, however if you would like to preserve one of the profiles, setting up Firefox Sync n a new account may be encouraged after disconnecting the accounts from the other computers.

If I may ask what kind of devices are you using and is it safe to assume that they are all on the current version and on the same account?

Thank you!

Hi, I'm running three PCs/Notebooks with Windows 7 and two accounts (Admin + Limited user) plus two android phones. All the devices are using Firefox and all the Firefox installations are connected to the same new Firefox account. Whenever I change/add any bookmark on one computer and thereafter perform a Sync on any other machine in order to merge the bookmarks, I observe that the folder with the changed/added bookmark is completely empty on all machines. The rest of the Sync works fine regarding Add-ons, Passwords etc. Any idea?

1. Are you using another sync service? 2. The first machine you set the account up on, was the profile blank?

As for wiping there are two scenarios: Firefox Sync does not delete anything from a device unless one of two things is true: There are records on the server with the same ID, marked as deleted. This only happens if you have a client that deletes a record and then syncs. This is the flow that's happening when you've deleted a bookmark on one machine and it disappears on the others.

Or, one of the devices has sent a wipe command to the others, or in Sync 1.1 you chose to wipe the local device during setup. This shouldn't be possible at all in the Firefox Account-based Sync.

As for attaching more than one user account to the same Firefox account on the same computer I have not tried this.

Hi guigs2, I have been using the first/old version of Firefox Sync before. However when the new Sync version became available I have deleted the old account and created a new one, which was blank when I connected the first device. On this first sync Firefox detected the name of my computer and supplied an own naming convention like "uglings Firefox auf home1-ugling". However Firefox was giving the same name for my second/limited login on the same computer. Like in Linux I'm configuring an Admin account also under Windows, however for security reasons I'm mainly working under a restricted account with limited user rights. For that reason I have adjusted the naming convention of Firefox Sync under the limited accounts to the account name e.g. "uglings Firefox auf home1-limited". The problems with the deletion of complete bookmark folders didn't appear when I have deleted a bookmark, but after I have added bookmarks. Thanks for your help!

When you switched over to the new account, when you set it up the profile was blank and the name was: "uglings Firefox auf home1-ugling". Then on another login for the same computer, the name on the account was the same, so you changed the name.

So when you added bookmarks on the newly named computer account (the restricted account), all of the bookmark folders disappeared. Summary for clarification, sorry for the repetitiveness.

STR:

  1. unlink account from old sync
  2. create new windows account on same computer
  3. on new account create sync account that has a blank profile and wait to sync. name is CILBMHVM6DT
  4. go to the previous windows account and add the new sync account to the old profile. (i did get a warning that there was an older account that was signed into, but I hit sync anyway) name was WIN-CILBMHVM6DT
  1. Wait for it to sync.
  2. rename the computer name associated with sync on old profile because it has the same name.(renamed old one to WIN-2)
  3. Add bookmarks to new windows account
  4. Go back to old windows account and see the new folder, but some previous folders are missing and bookmarks are out of their original folder.

Expected: Merged folders to remain same file structure

Results: Some bookmarks are not in folders that no longer appear in the bookmarks toolbar folder.

2 accounts on the same computer connected to the same Firefox Sync account had the same name and deleted some bookmark folders.

I filed a bug on this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1046954

However in the meantime we can only recreated the folders that are missing on the accounts that you have set up. If this happens again, I will ask if it has to do with the unique identifier of each device attached to an account (I am assuming that its just the name that we renamed) But please also continue the discussion for this in the bug.

Thank you!

Hi guigs2, sorry to say that, but I'm fed up with the problems of Firefox regarding the bookmark sync. I'm switching to Chrome instead, because here all devices and all user accounts are connected to one Google Account and the sync of all data works without problems. I'm certainly not a fan of Google, but things that work are better for me.

Cheers!

To make it easy to sync bookmarks between browsers there is also an add on called Xmarks. Be sure to try Firefox a bit later when Firefox Sync improves with the progress it makes with feedback. Thank you!

Hi guigs2, thanks for the hint. However I have been using Xmarks already for years. Now I'm convinced that I don't want to use another Addon which slows down browser performance. I'd rather use a function within the browser itself - provided that it works.

Cheers!

Were you using Xmarks in addition to Sync?

The answer is no. I've been using Xmarks already before the first Firefox Sync was introduced. When I started to use this, I have removed Xmarks from Firefox. Then I used Xmarks again - after the first Firefox Sync Version caused problems - together with MS IE, Google Chrome and Firefox. When the new Firefox Sync was introduced I removed Xmarks again completely. Presently I'm only using the Sync function within Chrome and - sorry to say, but - it works on all my devices (PCs, Netbook, Smartphone and Tablet). Cheers
