It says "can't read PDF files with this browser running. Exit and try again." I have Adobe 9.3.2 installed. It didn't give me this message with earlier versions of Adobe. Is there a way to go BACKWARDS? How do I save the PDF files so I can close them and view them without using the browser?

== I downloaded later versions of Adobe.

EG try sarugby.co.za > About us > contact us > and it then says click here to download a pdf file. And immediately THAT message comes up. Have had the same problem on a number of other sites and am now *#@!*@!!!!

Came up on my system when I clicked "click here". I use Foxit (free) not Adobe. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/

Just a note about installing Foxit Reader. Watch for the attached screen and un-check the last 2 items as shown. Otherwise you will get the Ask toolbar (yuk) and have your home page changed.

Until about a week ago I could download PDFs from wherever. Now for some reason I get a message saying: The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit AA/R and exit your web browser and try again. I use a firefox browser. So I did what it said - NOTHING. So then I tried Internet Explorer. Still didn't work. So then I opened the reader (version 9) first then tried to open the PDF - no luck. Then I tried restarting the machine - no luck. So is it an Adobe Problem a firefox problem or is it me?

I have the exact same symptoms as Maggie in that I have issues with BOTH Firefox and IE8. This leads me to believe that Adobe Reader is at fault. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it with the exact same results. I can 'Save Link As...' and use Reader for most .pdf's, but unfortunately some of our company documents, like reference manuals, are only accessible through an index .pdf (yeah, seemed like a good idea until it doesn't work!) Our IS staff are puzzled and this is low priority as I seem to be the only one affected so far. This is on a clean PC so the only other thing I can think of was the installation of NET 4 framework installed with Visual Studio 2010, which I have since removed (no easy feat) purely for this issue but the NET 4 framework may still linger. (I can't remember why I thought this may be related, so it may be a red herring.) Any help would be much appreciated!

So frustrating.... what's up? All I get is a totally black screen.

Thanks, Edmeister, but I've already been thru those and still no joy. I've also applied the advice from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405461.html which doesn't help either.

Unless I get a definitive answer from someone who has resolved this issue, I think the next course of action will be to uninstall both apps, then start from scratch. The issue may have been transferred when I copied my previous Firefox configuration over from previous installation - I see an entry in 'Options -> Applications' for Adobe Acrobat Document but not Adobe Portable Document Format.

But none of this explains why IE8 is also affected. And I definitely have the latest updates for all apps involved.

Too much time has been spent on this already, and I do have (painfully inefficient!) means of retrieving the info I need, so I might give it a few days to see if someone has a solution or an update fixes it. Here's hoping! Thanks for your help.
