why is my firefox extreeeeemmmmmlyy slow?
I have FF 68.0.1 installed on my works computer. The last few weeks it has been suicidally slow to open and intermittently hangs when asked to open links in another tab.
From the moment you open FF, you are greeted with a white screen and it just thinks for around 10 seconds before the familiar search screen is visible. I can type away and whilst the white screen is visible and what I've typed appears in the search bar when it becomes visible.
All extensions are up to date and opening it in safe mode isn't any better either. I've reset FF and still the same.
If I click on the Plus symbol or try to open a link in another tab it can just hang for a few seconds before doing anything.
Does anyone know of what else I can check?
Thanks

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
- Options/Preferences -> General: Performance
remove checkmark: [ ] "Use recommended performance settings"
remove checkmark: [ ] "Use hardware acceleration when available" - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/performance-settings
Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting for changes to take effect.
You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.
As per suggestions, I disabled hardware acceleration and the problem persists.
I've reset FF, uninstalled, removed program file folders and then reinstalled. Again the problem persists.
I've recently upgraded the display driver too.
I'll see if I can boot in to safe mode when I get back in to work Monday to see whether this makes a difference.

Right, booting computer in to safe mode with networking appears to make a difference in that FF is as responsive as it normally is. There is no visible lag to the extent I'm seeing when the computer is not in safe mode and I'm not waiting in the 10's of seconds with a white screen!!
Not sure about what this indicates?
That means something else in the computer is the issue. As a test, disable your protection programs.
I wish I could but that is under the control of the IT guys who are inflexible to say the least... I'll have to see what I can do tomorrow. AFAIK, no one else using FF has this issue and we are all under the same draconian protection. I'll see what they say...
Unfortunately nothing to do with anti-virus.
Switched that off and FF still has the same issues.
Then it may be something else on your system.
