The "Settings for Clearing History" dialog, under Options > Privacy, offers the option "Browsing & Download History", but I want to have Firefox automatically clear the download history when I close Firefox, but not the browsing history. Is this possible? I searched the Mozilla Add-Ons site, but found nothing.

I'm using FF ver. 48 because ver. 49 introduced a problem related to auto-resizing of images when the window is resized that I find unacceptably annoying (I reported this to the FF development team).

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button.

FredMcd, thanks for your reply. I already tried the route you suggest. The Settings button gets one to the Settings for Clearing History dialog. There, the only relevant option is Browsing & Download History. This is either both or none. I want to clear download history but NOT browsing history.
