Firefox uses two files to load and store passwords: key3.db and signons. lite Both files are present in the profile and both are filled with password relevant information. However, the password manager, which can be found under Options, remains empty. When i open webpages which require passwords, and of which i know for sure they are in the passwords files, firefox does not fills them out in the apprioriate boxes. Logic, as the passwords are not loaded in hte password manager

Additional info: When i now save a password of a webpage, it does store the information and fills out the boxes on the webpage. This problem occured when setting back the old profile [copy - paste] in the relevant folder which i found thru Help-problemsolving-show maps]

No I already figured it out. Made a copy of the entire profile. copied the old info into the newly created profile

Took a old key3.db from a backup Took the latest signon.lite which contains all the recent passwords Placed these two files [overwrite] into the new profiel

et voila. Everything is back

Where you using a Master Password with the signons.sqlite and key3.db files that you restored?

Did you make sure to restored matching signons.sqlite and key3.db files

If the Password Manager doesn't show the names and passwords that should be stored in the signons.sqlite file then it is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db file and you may have to remove both files and let Firefox create new files.
You can keep a backup copy just in case.

You can also try to check the signons.sqlite file to see if there are usual looking recoreds in the file.

You can use the SQLite Manager extension in Firefox to inspect SQLite database files.

I use a masterpassword in Firefox itself [options - security] However, it is no longer requesting the masterpassword. When i go there, the option is not in use. When i click it, it wants to set a complete new masterpassword

I used textprogram to inspect the files and they appear to be normal

I have no idea what i can or should do with a sqlite manager. Got installed, and then what?

I have no intentions to create new key base, as there are quite some passwords in their. So i want to recover the content. Because the information is in there

You will have to delete the signons.sqlite and key3.db files as it appears that you either have a wrong or a corrupted key3.db file and start anew with fresh files.

If the current key3.db didn't work then it sounds that this file was corrupted.
You are lucky that you had a previous copy of the key3.db file that used the same Master Password and that still worked.
