Location-Aware Browsing doesn't work any longer

For some reason my browser (Firefox 27.0.1) doesn't seem to support Location-Aware Browsing. I haven't had a use for it in quite some time so I didn't really notice it wasn't working until now. In the past I've seen the notification bar pop-up (though AFAIK that was when I was still running Ubuntu).

It won't show the notification bar that asks for your location when a page requests it nor does allowing a specific page through Page Info change anything. It also doesn't matter if I run in safe-mode (all extensions/add-ons disabled) or if I create a completely new Firefox profile. The issue remains.

I'm testing it through the site http://html5demos.com/geo which permanently shows "checking...". The only thing I can change is change geo.enabled to false which will block the functionality all together.

P.S.

Location-Aware Browsing is working fine on the same machine when using Google Chrome

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
