Delay of several minutes before audio streaming begins

more options

For a few days the audio streams from France Musique and Radio Classique have appeared not to work: in fact they start several full minutes after being clicked on. I believe they use the WMP add-on. I suspect a problem with the Flash 11.3 plug-in, but although the Adobe forum suggests downgrading to 11.2 or 10.3, the installer doesn't actually allow this. Firefox reports all plug-ins up-to-date. Problem persists in Firefox Safe Mode (with only WMP and Flash plugins enabled). Identical problem with Chrome browser. However, no apparent problems with videos or their soundtracks: all seem to work fine. NB. Unlike in Chrome or Fx, the audio streams from those two radio stations play fine in both x64 and x32 versions of IE9 browser. I would like a clue as to where to start trouble-shooting.

Very interesting! Try to listen to this stream: http://dev.nexmix.com/trulocal/player/index-test.html

This was the issue I was having, where streams took a long time to load before playing. With 512 it should not take any time at all at a 12mbps download.

Also, after the change did you reboot?

more options

Yes, had to reboot to get UAC restored. I've just tried both radio stations (separately, of course) after having opened SAV and disabled Web Protection: both came on virtually instantly. Restoring Web Protection brought the delay back. So I think we have established that my problem

  1. Was caused by an update to Sophos AntiVirus
  2. Is affected by the figure in <contentSizeLimit>nnn</contentSizeLimit>
  3. Is not affected by deleting the item <item>audio/unknown</item>

But there are lots of other items, like octet-stream, in the mimeTypeList. Maybe it's one of them?

David, possibly. I would suggest to tinker around there and see what could be the issue. First, find the mimetype of the item you're looking to remove out of there. If it is YouTube, search for "YouTube MIME type".

In my search I came up with: application/x-shockwave-flash

Again, you'll have to do digging of items you wish to remove and see if that works.

Thanks! :)

Dear Chris (or anyone else familiar with Sophos).

I'm not thrilled about turning off what Sophos evidently see as a useful protection, so I haven't experimented with finding exactly what line to remove from factory.xml (quite apart from the nuisance of stopping services, turning off UAC, and rebooting twice for every test). By reducing the scan from 2048 to 512, I've mitigated the problem already. I would prefer to add the two problem radio stations to a whitelist so that those particular sources aren't sampled by SAV. Does anyone know if that's possible?

David
