I am having this problem too! After a while some firefox buttons will stop responding to left mouse clicks. The menus and tabs respond but everything else (minimize, maximize, close) will not. Pop up menus like the download manager will not respond either. I can open the download manager through the menu but I cannot close it, clear the list, or click downloads. The only way to close firefox is through file >>exit but if there are mutiple tabs open I cannot click the save and quit, etc. buttons and I have to close firefox through the task manager. The problem occurs randomly. Sometimes it will not happen at all and other times it will happen immediately upon starting FF. I have tried disabling all of the plugins and extensions, reinstalling various versions of FF, and using new profile, but none of these things have helped. This is only happening in FF; no other programs do this.

If you still have the problem in a new profile then you probably have a problem with the mouse drivers or a hardware problem with the mouse. You can try a different mouse.

You can also try a clean (re)install:

  • Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
  • Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
  • Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

I have a dell inspiron 1545 and a dell technician just replaced my touchpad a couple of months ago.

Also, do you still think there is either a driver or hardware problem with the mouse if the issue only occurs in Firefox, given the fact that this does not happen with any other browser, program, or windows(7) itself?

I will try the clean install per your suggestion and see what happens.

Thanks
