ctrl+w not closing tabs

ctrl+w stopped working. I can no longer close tabs in firefox using this shortcut. I have tried using the shortcut add-on but no matter what combination i use with ctrl+* nothing will close tabs. i know i can use ctrl+F4 but this is very annoying. What happened and is anyone else having this issue??

Any ideas would be so helpful. Did I turn off something on windows??

Are you trying to close a pinned tab via "Ctrl+W" as that won't work, you can only close a normal tab via "Ctrl+W". To close a pinned tab, you either need to middle-click the tab with the mouse wheel or use the right-click context menu.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

I already tried both of these and unfortunately it did not help.

So Troubleshoot Mode doesn't work as well?

Do you at least see "Close Tab" if you right-click a tab?

Yes it shows but doesn't show the shortcut next to it and no it doesn't work in troubleshooting mode.

The Tab context menu doesn't show any keyboard shortcuts for me, the "Close Tab" entry with the "Ctrl+W" shortcut is shown if I open the Menu bar via the keyboard (Alt+F) and not if I click the mouse to open the File menu.

Did you try a new window ?

Yes I can close tabs with the context menu and I also see the same with the drop down menu options. There are no about:config options to change ctrl+w either that I have found. Also I do not have a middle mouse button on my trackpad.
