On my mac, netflix is not coming in normally on firefox but it does on safari?

Tried to view a download short (2min) video from NYTimes. It works on Safari and on iphone but not on Firefox. Recently downloaded Netflix and same thing. It works on Safari and not on Firefox. wondering if it has to do with plug-ins? What is Java Applet plug in and Move Networks Quantum Media Player plug ins? What video plug ins do I need? I have a macbook pro with OS10.8.4
