windows 7 update keeps asking to update from version 11 to version 10.0.2

more options

I am running windows 7 64-bit, and updated to firefox 11. Now, windows update constantly appears and says I need to update to Mozilla Firefox (en-US) 10.0.2 32-bit. Obviously that is not correct. But I used the update anyway, and now every time I open Firefox, the window appears in the browser saying I am not running the current version. So there is a vicious cycle. Any suggestions? I have also tried installing the beta 12 version, but the windows update still appears.

I would suggest installing a new profile. Go to http://getfirefox.com and download it. Once that is done run the installer once you get to a point where is says standard or custom select custom and hit next and then change the destination folder to somewhere else and then you now have a fresh version of firefox that shouldn't give you any issues.

I am not sure why Windows is telling you to update Firefox, or are the messages being generated elsewhere, maybe a screenshot would help.

If it helps I can confirm that Fiferox 11 is the current Release version, but you appear to be aware of that already.

I note from the system info aside listed modified preferences include

browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID
20120312181643
browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone
rv:11.0

I am assuming the above are correct but am using Linux myself at the moment.

John99, those prefs are correct.

Firefox nightly now allows you to create anew profile with a few mouse clicks. In the current release version Firefox 11 it is slightly more complicated but there is no need to install a fresh version of Firefox, instead follow these instructions

If you decide to go for a clean install of Firefox note it is the program files that are deleted not the profile (or you will destroy bookmarks and passwords)

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Lucky, the PC is newer so I was not too worried about saving profiles. I did try a clean reinstall w/deletion of all preferences, but this did not work either. Using a custom install changing the directory was the only thing that worked. Wish I knew the underlying cause, but problem solved. Thanks.

Is this in a company environment? Microsoft's WSUS (update server software) can be extended to push out non-Microsoft software updates. I assume that's not used very often, but it could explain why Firefox appeared in a dialog that ordinarily only lists Microsoft products.
