I use CCCleaner at the end of each of my PC sessions. Since updating to FF5, I frequently get a message from CC saying that it cannot clean everything since FF is still running. This is after I've closed FF. I look in Task Manager, Apps and FF is not there. However, in Processes, there is an entry for FF. When I stop it, all is fine. How can I ensure that when I close FF, the process is also stopped?

Tks

Do a clean (re-)install:

-> Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

-> Uninstall your current Firefox version and Remove the Firefox Program Files folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.

  • Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox Program Files folder to Remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after Uninstalling.

Check and tell if its working.

Thanks for your help. I followed the links on that page and did all the required fixes, including starting FF in safe mode. The problem persisted. I can expand on the problem a bit, though. When I close Firefox, then try to open it again, I get the message shown on one of the links that FF is open and not responding. I can then go to task manager and kill the process. That is one of the solutions set out in the help page. That works, but I would prefer FF to shut down properly. Since this problem started with FF 5, I can always go back to a previous version, or wait for a new version to see if the problem goes away.

Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

mha007: I've tried most of those, with no change. I'll try the rest and get back here.

xircal: There is no change when I run in safe mode. Tks, though.

Tks, Xircal. I'm going to keep trying things. I had hoped for an easy fix. No such luck.  :-) It looks like it's going to be an extension or add-on that doesn't like FF5.

Running Firefox in Safe Mode disables all your Add-ons. You mentioned you already tried that.

Tks Xircal. I was confusing the term Add-ons with Extensions and Plugins.

I've spent more than enough time on this, I think. I'll decide if I should just live with using Task Manager or go back to an older version.

I want to thank you and mha007 for taking the time to give you me your advice.

mha007: I had followed the link in Xircal's most recent post.

I have also done everything listed in your three links except uninstalling and re-installing FF5. If I do uninstall 5, I'll simply install an older version that worked fine.

I have spent hours on this, using safe mode, creating new profiles, setting FF to its defaults, and all the other steps set out in the links, and the links from the links.

Enough is enough. I really do appreciate your help, but getting 5 to behave properly simply is not worth the time I've put into it, and it certainly isn't worth putting any more time into it. By the time I get 5 to work, it will be replaced by 6 anyway.  :-)

I finally got around to doing a clean install of FF6. So far, that seems to have solved the problem.

Tks to both of you for getting involved.
