Firefox- ESR for Windows 7: Will I lose features i now have? Will it continue to sync with Win 10 device?
Hello: I'm on Windows 7 on one of my devices, and using Firefox 115.0.2. When I try to update to 115.0.3 the update fails. I'm directed to download the ESR version
QUESTIONS:
1) Will I lose features, add-ons, extension I now have if I go to the ESR?
2) Will I still be able to sync the Firefox on win7 with Firefox on a windows 10 device?
Thanks ~eliuri

Hello Eliuri,
If you switch to the Firefox ESR version, you might not lose all features, add-ons, or extensions, but some might not be compatible. ESR versions are designed for enterprise environments and receive updates less frequently, so new features might not be available as quickly. It's best to check compatibility with your essential add-ons before making the switch.
Yes, you can still sync Firefox on Windows 7 with Firefox on your Windows 10 device. Firefox Sync allows you to synchronize your bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings across devices, regardless of the version you're using.
To fix the update issue, try these steps:
First, make sure you have a backup of your important data. Check if any add-ons are causing conflicts and disable them temporarily. Clear your browser cache and cookies. Download the latest version of Firefox directly from the official website and install it over your existing version. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions or need further assistance.

Windows 7, 8, 8.1 (and macOS 10.12, 10.13, 10.14) is being dropped starting Firefox 116 and later Releases as Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.15 or later is the minimum. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-users-windows-7-8-and-81-moving-extended-support#
Firefox 115 ESR is basically based on the Firefox 115 Release but will be supported for an extended period of time with security and allowed stability fixes. Firefox 115.15.0esr is the last planned update in September 2024.
Normally ESR is meant for Enterprise users in mind however this way Windows 7, 8, 8.1 user will still have a secure updated Firefox for a while longer. The last time this was done for EOL Windows was with WinXP/Vista and Firefox 52 ESR which had last update (52.9.0esr) over two years after Chrome, Chromium, Opera, Edge dropped XP/Vista.
Meanwhile Chrome, Chromium, Opera, Edge have already dropped support for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 back in January/February.
Yes you should be able to continue to use Extensions though it may be possible that down the road some versions of the Extension is made for a newer version of Firefox in mind maybe because of new changes or new features in the then current Firefox Releases so you may be stuck with using a older version of the extension on Fx 115 ESR then. Yes you can sync to Firefox on Win10 though if you are still using Firefox 115 ESR for quite some time after it is EOL you may have have issues using sync then down the road.
The word Add-ons is a general term that groups together the separate Extensions, Themes, search engines, dictionaries, language packs, Plugins. Though NPAPI Plugins has not been supported for some time now.
