Missing "view image info"

more options

When I right click on an image on the web I used to be able to click on "View Image Info" and it would give me information about the image, like image size and url of the image. After Firefox upgraded this is now gone. Can I get it back ? Is there a work around ? Not sure why that option would be removed.

Some context menus have been cleaned up in Firefox 87 and the "View Image Info" item has been removed along with some others. The best workaround is probably to check the image in the Inspector via Inspect Element in case there are a lot of images instead of scrolling through "Tools -> Page Info -> Media" depending on your use case. You can access "Page Info" via the padlock icon on the location bar (Right Arrow -> "More information"). Note that "View Page Info" if you right-click free space on the webpage is still present, but will be removed in Firefox 88 as well.

Is there any good reason given for removing the info option, or is it just one more "because we could"?

There isn't any built-in way to add it back, unfortunately. One possible workaround would be to use an add-on.

I don't have a straightforward replacement for View Image Info, but I added image info to one of my existing extensions if you want to try it. Its main purpose is to convert WebP files to other formats, but ignoring that for the moment, you can access image info two different ways:

(1) Stand-alone viewer

If you right-click the image and Ctrl+click (or middle-click) View Image to open the image in a new tab, you'll get the info displayed. See first screenshot.

(2) Overlay

When you right-click an embedded image, then click "Save webP as..." the extension displays a bar of conversion buttons, along with an "info" button. The info button provides as much information about the image as I've figured out how to provide as of today. See second screenshot.

Extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/save-webp-as-png-or-jpeg/

Maybe I can make that a little more targeted, but not this weekend.

There is a UI refresh in the works that is radically simplifying the menus. Quite unfortunate for people who like the less used options and have gotten used to the ludicrously long menus.

Hi all, there is work under way to return the built-in feature in a future update, maybe in two months. There will be a preference to enable it; it will only be automatically enabled for the Developer Edition.

Until then, if you are considering extensions, I posted one last week that you could look at:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/view-image-info-reborn/

Here's what its info window looks like:
