Another idea: Maybe there is an email on the server causing a log jam. Maybe it was in the Inbox, but got moved to 'spam' and this is causing an issue.
Log on to webmail account using a browser. Empty the 'Spam' folder.
In Thunderbird click on 'Get Messages' If still no joy, then make a note of the last email you successfully downloaded. Log on to webmail account using a browser. Look for the oldest not yet downloaded email in Inbox and move it another folder.
then retry: In Thunderbird click on 'Get Messages'
Report back on results.

That sort of error is usually caused by anti virus email scanning.... try disabling it and see how you go.
Thanks for the suggestion. I disabled the scanning but it didn't help. Maybe I should try backing up and then reinstalling?

You're a gem! It was a spam email sitting in my server's inbox which I deleted & hey presto - download time. Many thanks. The virtual beers are on me.
