How do I remove Ecosia Search engine permanently

more options

I added the Ecosia search engine and it sat in the list of search engines to use though my default remained DuckDuckGo.

Since the last Firefox update the Ecosia search engine always appears as the default and despite removing it from the list of serach engines, re-launching Firefox always returns it as the default search engine again.

Because it is so awful and becuase of it forcing itself onto my search choices I just want to remove it completely and forever from Firefox.

How do I do this?

Thanks

You have an add-on (extension) named "Ecosia — The search engine that plants trees!". You probably need to remove that to regain control.

You can start on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then find that one and Remove if possible, otherwise Disable. While you're here, disable anything you don't recognize or don't use any more.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that solve the search problem?

If there isn't a Remove button, this indicates that the extension was installed outside your personal settings folder. Often it can be removed through the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. I suggest clicking the "Installed on" column heading to group by date, since that helps in tracking down bundled items that may have snuck onto your system with something you actually wanted.
