TABS change state slowly (30-45 seconds) & FF becomes Not Responding
If I open a new tab or window, FF takes about 15-20 seconds where I can't type anything, then becomes Not Responding for another 15-20 seconds, before it opens and I can type something (either in the URL field or Search field).

Try to clear the history.
You can also check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
Rename (or delete) the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files and delete possible numbered sessionstore-##.js files in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
Ha ha very funny... even getting to the History drop down took 30 seconds; then another 30 sec for the Clear All History pane to appear; now its just stuck on that pane; I'm trying to click on the boxes for what I don't want cleared.
I'm using Safari to enter this message, and the Clear All History pane is "stuck" in front of the Safari window, which is what I am typing into. Have to slide the Clear All History out of the way to see what I'm doing.
Several minutes of Not Responding so Force Quit.
Started in Safe Mode & cleared the history...
Restart without loading previous session... windows & tabs come up quickly...
reload session...
page taking forever to begin loading... also forever to actually quit once I hit the red button... Not Responding...
Not Responding so force quit...
Here's a point: when starting up FF is loading the last session. But I'm positive I set Session Manager to ASK what session to load.
Deleted the sessionstore files...
worse. locked up whole computer, had to do a Hard Shutdown with the power key.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem
