New Tabs won't open unless you open a link that opens a new tab, but closing is no issue?
Can't open new tabs in same window. Opening links is the only way new tabs will open. Closing those tabs works fine.

Please reinstall Firefox. I had the same problem and solved it this way.
You need to uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and the current version of Firefox.
