With new TB installation no OAuth2. Asks for passowrd. What to do? SOLVED caused by being on old version
I now have a new laptop. Installing TB was OK except for the password. It keeps asking for a new one. I have a desktop, and that's fine, as is my old laptop, and both computers use Gmail - no problem. But I note that the new installation has no OAuth2 option for password authentication. What do I do about this?

Oauth is only available for gmail using IMAP and SMTP. It is not an option when using POP.
I am on imap, though.
You may be using IMAP on your providers server but are you adding the account to Thunderbird as IMAP. When you open Account Settings-Server Settings does the screen have IMAP at the top like indicated in the attached image? And the choice for Oauth2 is not in the drop down list? I have trouble believing that one account setup screen has that choice and another in the same version and installation of Thunderbird does not. Post a screenshot of your server setting page for the account in question.

A very valid question! I had assumed that at the installation TB would have updated itself to the latest version, but no, it was v17!! I now have the latest, and it works. Thanks a bundle for your help.
Thunderbird added Oauth2 to version 38 after gmail deemed everyone but them "less secure apps".
I now find that messages won't get sent! Apparently the smtp settings need checking, but they seems to me OK. Messqges did get sent after I upgraded to the latest version but now it's stopped.
