Firefox 19.0 locks up when trying to load Facebook. This started yesterday, March 5 at about 1300 hrs PST. After a long delay, a Warning: Unresponsive Script dialog appears, saying that "A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding". The script listed is https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yH/r/LEOX0R6UVT4.js:16. Clicking either Continue or Stop Script has the same effect: the entire Firefox application remains frozen. After several minutes, the same warning box appears again. The only way to escape the situation is to force-close Firefox. The crash reporter never appears.

Facebook loads normally in both Chrome and IE8.

Found the problem!

The Facebook Desktop Plug-in turns out to be the culprit. Disabling the Facebook Desktop Plug-in allowed Facebook to load and function normally.

Go Figure.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thanks for the reply, but no joy.

More of the Facebook home loads than before, but it Firefox still freezes.

Now it locks up on a different script:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/ys/r/TE84NyvT6Eq.js:16"

If I click, "Stop Script" Firefox stays frozen. On force close, the Windows Error Report sequence says I need to update Firefox, but the Mozilla website says Firefox is up-to-date.

I have the same problem and reset doesn't solve it. No other problems.

Please update the Java plugin to the latest 7U17 version.

See Java Platform > Java SE 7U17 and 6U41 (JRE Download)

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

You can also check for problems caused by other plugins like Java.

The Java SDK 7U17 turned into a can of worms. The installation stalled twice, both times sending McAfee Virus protection into overdrive. The second time, it also triggered a Windows Data Execution error stop. I used mcsonfig to disable all Start-Up items, restarted, did a complete uninstall/reinstall on the McAfee Virus protection. Then I was able to install the java 7U17.

Still no joy. Facebook still freezes Firefox.

The java update did nothing to help.

Thanks for the info guys. Is anyone having this issue that isn't using the Facebook Desktop Plugin? We are trying to gather data to get to the root of the issue.

Also, is anyone having this issue who isn't using Windows XP?

I started experiencing this exact same issue a week ago too: every time I went to www.facebook.com, it would load most of the page except for the right-hand FB sidebar, then Firefox would freeze and become unresponsive. After several minutes, I'd get this error:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

I tried starting FF in safe mode, as well as in Private Browsing mode, but no joy. Finally I came across this page and now I've disabled the Facebook Desktop plugin (v1.0.0.12), and Facebook is working correctly again!! That plugin is clearly the culprit.

I'm running Firefox 19 on Windows XP.

I am using XP, but not the FB desktop plug-in. I reset Firefox, which initially worked. Though next time I came back it was freezing again.

I have been having the same problem for over a month now. I am NOT using the Facebook Desktop plug-in, in fact I can't even find it when searching Firefox add-ons. I am running Windows 8 (64bit). When I get the pop-up, I can either let it run (and shortly get another not responding pop-up) or stop it (and it really does stop it). I am running Firefox version 20.0.1

I have a similar problem in that my entire Notebook (HP Pavilion) w 2GB RAM locks up for about 30 seconds, but only the first time that I try to go to the Facebook URL. The next time i try to access Facebook it takes mabye a couple of seconds which is the normal response.

I do NOT have have the Facebook Desktop Plug-in, and all of my other software is up to date including FF which is 20.0.1, running under Vista Home Premium. It appears that Facebook is trying to load from a URL fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net... This started occurring a couple of weeks ago. Anyone have any other ideas?

I have noticed that if I leave Facebook sitting at "Home" or "News Feed", this is where the hangs occur and I get the "script not responsive" message. However, if I leave Facebook sitting at my Timeline, or any of my Favorites or Groups, the hang doesn't seem to occur. None of those pages have the Ticker in the right column.

I am also running the Social Fixer 7.501 addon, and as an experiment, just set the Social Fixer option to "Hide the Friends Activity Ticker". Now, I'll leave Facebook sitting at "Home" to see if it still hangs. Well, tried it and it didn't make any difference. Oh, well.

I found on another posting that it's the FB Chat window. Close it and close the sidebar and I think it will stop hanging. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem and I don't use the FB plugin - nor am I interested in adding it. I'm working Windows 7 Pro with Firefox 21.0. I don't have any issues with lag or freezing until I enter the FB address. It locks up instantly. The Firefox memory log in the Task Manager shoots up to 500,000 to 800,000k or more. It eventually breaks whatever loops it's in, then things run smoothly. Very weird.

You seem to have more access to you PC than I do Charmayne. When I simply enter the FB URL into Firefox and hit enter, my entire machine locks up for around 45 seconds. I can't even click on anything like for instance, my Windows Task manager window that i always have active. i can't use my mouse or anything else.
