I have lost my passwords several times. I have reloaded FF and now it does not ask to save PW when I first open a site. Is there a way to get real help with FF or is it time to look for another browser?

Go to Options, Security, in Passwords, check the box to remind your passwords. Click in exceptions button and delete the sites you want firefox to ask you again to remind your password.

Please reply if it works.

This is not the problem. I have deleted FF from my computer and reloaded it. It now does not ask to save passwords.

Interesting side line. When I deleted FF it retained my bookmarks when reloaded. It is getting to the point that nothing with FF is working as it should.

Before I go any further how do I save my bookmarks before I delete FF for another try?

The best way to keep your informations is using the Firefox Sync wich will save all your personal informations in mozilla server and every time you reinstall the firefox even in other computers you can get your data back again. Use the link below to know how to use Firefox Sync.

Firefox Sync

Please reply if this helps.

That is another issue. My problem at this point is I can not save passwords. I have deleted FF twice an reloaded it. Even having deleted it it retained my bookmarks telling me it was not a complete delete.

Is there a way to restart the ability to save passwords?

This is the third time in less than a month i have lost passwords.

Looks like this was a known problem way back in FF 3. http://kb.mozillazine.org/User_name_and_password_not_remembered

It is back

If you lose profile data like the passwords on a scheduled base then you need to check any cleanup software that is running and exclude the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here.

What takes the place of the key3 file if I delete it. If I delete the renamed files what takes there place.

I have read the password management post. they are a closed loop that says nothing.

At this point I can save some passwords but am not asked to save with some new site. It is a complete random system.

It looks like the last time I reloaded FF it defaulted to Private Browser and when I changed that I got some function back, but not all

Firefox will create new files key3.db and signons.sqlite if you (re)move the existing files and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If the files are corrupted then this should make Firefox store new names and passwords.

At this point I have gotten 50% of my password reestablished but I will save you last 2 comments for when it happens again.

Fire Fox used to be an effective Browser but it has lost more than it has gained lately.

One site will present my UN & PW but will not apply them. One site will fill in the UN & PW if I start to type it. One site has the UN & PW filled in but won't apply it till I hit sign in. One site will not present the UN & PW till I open the site a second time then it works as it should.

Maybe make more backups? See: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Why back up what dose not work to begin with. Maybe if I ever get all my site to work I will consider that

Fire Fox won't even log me into this Forum automatically. If I get an e mail that someone has posted to this thread I have to sign in to reply but my UN & PW are there but will not apply auto.

I thought the problem was that the password files were deleted or disabled every two weeks, so having backups would give you a good copy to revert to. If that doesn't sound useful, then never mind.

The PW & UN still appear in the file they just stop working for some sites. When I delete FF and reload it is hit or miss as to which site will work after reentry. As noted above all manor of results can be expected as to how if at all this feature will work.

I have read the troubleshooting password section you noted above. The refers to FF#3 and I am using FF13 Could that problem still exist without FF have solved it?

I went through this procedure and I am getting the same results. The save PW file was empty but as I added sites some site work, some will not save the PW, some will save the PW but no when called for

It is the same for current Firefox versions as for Firefox 3, both use the same files to store the encrypted names and passwords.
So you can give it a try and move the key3.db and signons.sqlite file to anther folder to make it possible to undo this action.

You are going to love this. I made new files for Key and signon and the same results as before with one exception.

FF opened a site I did not have a PW saved for. It does not open this site even though there is a PW saved for it. There is one site it will not even ask if I want to save the PW for it. There is no consistency at all except it is reaching the same results for the same sites each time. It seams to be controlled by the sites rather than by FF. I have had all of these site working in the past but it takes hours to finally get them all to work and i have no idea of what was the last thing I did that may have caused it to work.

One question I have is even when I delete FF and start over my bookmarks are there when I first open FF. This tells me that FF was not completely deleted and this problem may also not have been deleted. In the past if I deleted FF I had to import my bookmarks indicating they had been deleted as part of the deletion.

The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving and filling the name and password.

You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.
