Firefox refuses to remember passwords for commonly used websites
All my earlier versions of Firefox would offer to save a password for a new website (provided I had ticked the 'Remember passwords for sites' check-box.) Thereafter it would provide the password and user-name each time I entered the site. This was fine.
Now, for no apparent reason it has stopped working. To be specific: Firefox does not offer to remember passwords and does not fill in the username and password for those it says it is storing, even though 'remember passwords' is checked.
I tried turning off the password checkbox, closed Firefox, then opened it and checked the password box. No luck.
I then did the same but restarted the PC before ticking the password check box. Still no luck.
I then went to Upgrade and got a message saying a vital upgrade was needed. This I installed, and then rebooted. I am running Firefox 8 and the 'Help -->about Firefox' information display says I am now up to date. Still no luck.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
Thank you for your suggestion, but 'always use private browsing mode' was already deselected.

There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.
