I just tried to open Firefox and got the message "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem". DO NOT redirect to this link

It is useless. I tried to restore 3953 items from a previous back up and received the message "Unable to process the backup file".

I am not interested in hearing how to prevent this problem in the future, because obviously creating backups do not work.

How do I check to see if the problem was caused by security software, even though I have not added anything?

If you use Sync, best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button in "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support)

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button in "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

Thanks cor-el.

This is what the Verify Integrity shows:

> Task: checkIntegrity + The places.sqlite database is sane + The favicons.sqlite database is sane > Task: invalidateCaches - Unable to invalidate caches > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: originFrecencyStats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue wa

This means that your places.sqlite database is corrupted and you will have to start with a fresh file in case Firefox doesn't repair it like I posted above.

Thanks.

What could have caused the corruption? Is there any way to figure it out?

And is there any reason to continue to use Firefox knowing this same thing could happen at any time?

Also, is there any way to get any of that information back? A restore of the computer to a previous date?

Try the usual - clear cookies and site data - then log out of your Firefox Sync account and log back in.

I'd lost all my passwords in Firefox even though it said I was still logged in and using Sync. Rebooted and it asked me to log in again, which fixed it.

Thanks pljones.

I don't use Sync. Is there any way it could have gotten switched on by Firefox?
