aol verizon errors
I'm having a problem: running TB on Windows 10 my service went from Verizon to aol. Since then, chaos.
I am getting duplicate messages constantly
I cannot check "leave messages on server" because if I do, I cannot download messages. If I do check this box, TB pops up this error message:
"The LIST command did not succeed. Error getting the ID and size of a message. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: [SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later."
On AOL's webmail page I can see 5 new messages. Using TB, If I uncheck the "leave messages on server" box, the 5 new messages appear in TB's inbox but are then moved to TRASH on the AOL site, meaning that when TB downloads a message, it is sent to the trash on AOL and I cannot retrieve the new messages on my phone.
Conversely, I see messages on my phone using gmail and the stock android email app, but those messages also disappear whenever TB downloads them. from AOL
If I keep the box checked for "leave messages on server" on TB, then I see this message:
"The POP3 mailserver (verizon.net) does not support UIDL or XTND XLST"
When I called AOL and showed them the page where Toad Hall stated it was AOL's server sending this message, the AOL techs denied it.
Also, I tried changing my existing TB account to IMAP, but the instructions are likely for an earlier version of TB because the instructions don't match the existing TB setup.
Really hope someone can help me!
thanks,

I think I found the answer. By changing TB from POP to IMAP I'm able to get messages with TB while keeping the messages on the AOL server so my phone can get them too.
The problem was that the AOL techs didn't know the right IMAP credentials! I had to dig around to find them. Here they are, in case any else needs them:
AOL imap settings Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server • Server - export.imap.aol.com • Port - 993 • Requires SSL - Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server • Server - smtp.aol.com • Port - 465 • Requires SSL - Yes • Requires authentication - Yes

This shows how incompetent most help desk personnel are when the error states..
Mail server pop.verizon.net responded:
and they want to deny that the message came from them. Working for the company and not knowing the correct server settings or at least how to look them up is just sad.
Most help desk staff barely know to answer the phone when it makes a noise.
Current POP AOL settings, according to https://help.aol.com/articles/verizon-move-to-aol-mail-updating-your-third-party-email-program-or-mobile-device-with-your-new-account-information-pop3, are:
Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.net POP3-995-SSL Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net SMTP-465-SSL
I've set up TBird that way, and set AOL settings to use low security, but my TBird logins are rejected. This has been intermittent for the last few months, but I could eventually get logged in by logging on to AOL webmail (same credentials as used in TBird) and restarting TBird, but today nothing works.
I spent about 40 minutes trying to find someone in Verizon who had a clue, but finally gave up.

The best info I have is here: AOL imap settings Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server • Server - export.imap.aol.com • Port - 993 • Requires SSL - Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server • Server - smtp.aol.com • Port - 465 • Requires SSL - Yes • Requires authentication - Yes
As I said, I'm using POP, but will probably shift to IMAP as soon as I figure out how to preserve my 17 years of saved mail and continue to save it on my PC.
So far today, though, I've got POP working, but now SMTP is failing; AOL reports conflicting transactions, or some such. Temporarily using gmail for outgoing mail.
