Just updated to FF46 on an XP SP3 machine and continually crashes. Tried refresh and that didn't work. Is this version supposed to work on XP SP3?

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help > Troubleshooting Information" page (about:support).

  • click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.

Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.

I've already uninstalled and downloaded a fresh copy and installed and then it updated to 46 and seems to be working so far.

I've already uninstalled and downloaded a fresh copy but I don't understand why the download says Firefox Setup 43.0.1.exe ?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/get-latest-version-firefox-windows-xp-vista

It is because you are using WinXP. Since it is not possible to tell by default browser useragents on WinXP on whether the user has SP2 or SP3 installed, Mozilla is serving a version (43.0.1) that all WinXP SP2 + SP3 users can install and then update to current from. This is due to Microsoft requirement of signing the setups which started at version Firefox 43.0.2 and newer.

Since you have WinXP SP3 see https://download-installer.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/firefox/releases/46.0/win32/ and pick your language.

Thanks I was wondering why it did that.

I reverted back to 45.0.2 with all the same plug-ins and extensions and disabled auto-update and Firefox has been working fine. How can I find out why the 46 update causes crashes even with all extensions removed?

hi, next to the security software already in place, please run a scan with various other security tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner & eset online one-time scanner.

I had ran some of these a few days ago with only 2 results in one program which was the Microsoft Support Emergency Response Tool. Emsisoft Anti-Malware, Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware turned up nothing. Ran Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and Eset as you suggested. Nothing in Malwarebytes again. Adware found several registry entries that I wasn’t confident about deleting but I did delete 2 folders that were unnecessary and Eset found 1 strange file hidden on the Desktop which seems to be harmless but don't know if it should be deleted since I had to uncheck ‘Hide protected operating system files’ to see it.

I guess that's the end of me getting help?

Those were all on 5/1/2016 when I first updated to 46.0. Thanks

thanks, i suspect this is due to a fundamental change in the firefox javascript engine [1] in firefox 46, where we have seen some similar crashes caused by external software which wasn't playing nice as a result. one sort of it was external security software hooking into firefox (some exploit protection modules of some antivirus software, hitman pro alert, things like microsoft's emet tool and maybe sandboxing software) that was causing such crashes & others was malware (that's why i've recommended the scans beforehand). from your crash reports it isn't apparent that one or the other is a factor. so in case you have any security software present that might fit the description, please make sure it is fully updated or also see if the crashes continue once it is disabled/uninstalled. another thing that might help is firefox 46.0.1 which is available in the meantime - crashes like the ones you have referenced are 10x reduced compared to 46.0 (but that might also be due to those external software providers updating and fixing there software).

I use the full version of Emsisoft Anti-Malware that updates daily which has the Behavior Blocker. Should I disable that function and try 46.0.1 or disable the program completely?

more options

i would escalate things on the go. maybe first try to put firefox onto the "Monitored: No" list & if it doesn't help first disable this whole "Behavior Blocker" feature and maybe the whole app afterwards and see if the crashes are still occurring. in case this can help, it would also be good to get in touch with emisoft about that issue... thank you!

Okay I'll try that and see what happens. Thank you.
