The icon I used to use to open new tabs has disappeared since the last Firefox update. I cannot find a menu, button, icon or anything to open a new tab anymore. How am I supposed to open a tab?

p.s. If you want to change things people use regularly, make finding the new option intuitive for users. Users are not mind readers. If we can't see it, we can't find it.

First try start Firefox in safe mode:

If the problem doesn't happen in safe mode:

Also this can be a problem with your localstore.rdf:

You have a User.js file try go to your profile folder and rename or delete it.

  1. Go to your profile folder:
  2. Exit Firefox
  3. Rename or delete the User.js file
  4. Restart Firefox

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars
    Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup
