Audio stopped playing on on line radio stations but works on things like You tube

more options

Things were working fine then one day I could not get audio to play on my on line radio stations (specifically WGR Buffalo but not of them are working) You tube works fine, speakers work fine. WHen I google and look for other ways to stream the station the websites come up and show that they are playing but I cant hear the audio.

Curiously, the player page uses both HTML5 audio and Flash. At least on my system, the HTML5 audio player is the one actually used, playing an MP3.

Can you play (and hear) the MP3 file on this test page: http://hpr.dogphilosophy.net/test/

Yes I can hear that test audio file.

Oops: while the podcasts use MP3 media in the HTML5 player, the live stream does indeed use Flash. (Screen shot)

I assume you have the volume control cranked up in the page (using the button next to the square Stop button).

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

OK just to give some more info....I tried logging into ESPN LA and I CAN hear the audio for that radio station just fine.....it appears to just be a problem for WGR Buffalo

Could you try clearing any data the site has saved? Also check for those numeric IP addresses in the list. This page on Adobe's Macromedia site allow you to view and clear Flash storage for individual sites:

I don't have a good sense of why Flash would be muted on one site and not on other sites, if it wasn't data that Flash itself stored. Hopefully another volunteer will have an explanation/fix for that.
