When updating my plug ins I noticed a had 2 for shock-wave and 2 for java and also have Microsoft silverlight. I think I downloaded that in a attempt to get rid of Java. Note that the Flash Player and Shockwave for Director plugins are different plugins.

The latter (Shockwave for Director) is hardly (if ever) used these days, so you can uninstall if via the Windows Control Panel.

There is no alternative for Java on Windows.
It is usually best to leave Java disabled and only enable it for trusted websites if you visit websites hat require Java (JavaScript in not Java).
