firefox usually crashes on open. sometimes it opens but crashes later, this has happened several times today.

You can try to stop Trusteer Rapport if installing the latest version doesn't help.
Start Menu > Programs > Trusteer Rapport > Stop Rapport

that was it, trustee rapport was not to be trusted. i followed your instructions to stop it. firefox no longer crashes
