Hi, i'm using Firefox Sync and therefore FF asks for primary password on every startup. The delay until it asks for the password is annoying. e.g. already typing into my favorite search engine when i look up and see the seach term is typed into the password field because of the delayed, random popup.

I know there's a workaroud to pin Firefox Account site to speed things up, but this is a bad workaround. Why isn't it possible to change FF to ask for the password immediately when Sync is enabled. Can't be this hard.

P.S. Why isn't Chrome asking ever for a password, even if Sync and PW are stored?

In Firefox the stored logins and Sync credentials are stored encrypted in logins.json and you need to enter the Primary Password to unlock the logins to be able to connect to Sync. Google may not encrypt the login using a password or stores this data in another way. You can open the Lockwise (about:logins) page to force Firefox to ask for the Primary Password.

If i add Lockwise (about:logins) to a pinned tab, then all my logins are visible immediately. Not a good idea. If i'm not aware of my desk it may be visible to others fast, this is no safe method. Why not ask for the password immediately on FF startup, it's asked anyways. The random popup is annoying. I hate it, as a user i don't care how it's encrypted. As a devevolper it might be easy to ask for Sync on FF startup and if there is a sync (true), then ask for Primary Password now, else never ask. Why is this so hard to implement and stop annoying users?

I use sync but, that's just to back up browser settings and things to the cloud.

The Firefox password manager keeps my saved logins encrypted and the Primary Password is what unlocks the encrypted saved passwords.

I do wish it would ask for me to enter it as soon as I start Firefox.

Both Thunderbird and Seamonkey ask for it right when the program opens.. enter it then and you're good to go without having to wait until it decides to ask for it. I'm really hoping that Firefox soon implements asking for Primary Password entry right away when you start up Firefox instead of the "sit & wait" that I do currently when using it.

You can possibly open the Password Manager (about:logins page) to force a Primary Password prompt.

We could, but it's not a good idea to have all logins and passwords opened all the time. It might be visible to other persons nearby.

You can login or logout or change the PP in the security device manager.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Security -> Certificates -> Security Devices

In the left panel select "Software Security Device". You can find "Log In" and "Log Out" and "Change Password" in the very right panel. You may have to Zoom out the page to make this right panel visible.
