old bookmarks reappeared
Old bookmarks that I have either deleted or put elsewhere reappeared in my Bookmarks Toolbar (I find it difficult to check whether the Bookmarks Menu is also effected in this way since there are too many bookmarks there for me to remember what was where). The question is why: I can of course redo the organization, but it is effort and I can then never be sure that the problem won't occur again (and that it hasn't appeared elsewhere - see my remarks about the Menu - that I cannot check).

That could if you reset the pref that makes Firefox create these default bookmarks or otherwise do not keep its value.
browser.bookmarks.restore_default_bookmarks = false
When this pref is true then a new set of default bookmarks will be created.

best to save a copy of the bookmarks before starting anything ever.
I don't find this entry in about:config. The entries from browser.bookmarks are:
