In moving TB data, one option listed is Windows Easy Transfer. When I go to WIndows Easy Transfer, I see 6 folders to be saved but no Advanced option.
I am using Windows 8.1 and am upgrading to Windows 10 and would like to use Windows Easy Transfer but there is no Advanced option available. The description for using this option did not provide any details on where to find Windows Easy Transfer but I found it at c:Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows System\. If this is the correct location, how do I get to the Advanced option?
Chosen solution
I wrote the easy transfer instruction to transfer from XP to Vista and windows 7. It is simply not available in Windows 10. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-easy-transfer-is-not-available-in-windows-10
PC Mover express from Laplink is Microsoft's recommendation.
Unfortunately I can not make the program run. So I will not be updating the article.

You're upgrading your existing machine, or migrating from an older machine with 8.1 to a newer machine with 10?
Upgrading an existing computer.
I don't see that you should need a transfer program then. I would have thought that the steps are: 1) Make a safe, external backup copy of all your data. For Thunderbird, that means a copy of your current profile folder (the whole thing). This copy needs to be external -- ideally on an external hard drive. It needs to include all the files that you want to preserve if things go wrong -- documents, pictures, music files etc. 2) Upgrade the operating system. 3) Re-install all the programs: that includes re-installing the latest version of Thunderbird. 4) Copy your data back on to the machine. In the case of Thunderbird that includes restoring your saved profile. Instructions are given here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb The relevant section is 'restoring a profile backup', but it's worth reading the whole article to understand what you are doing. I'm not a Windows user, however, so you may want to ask for a second opinion before you proceed.
I agree with all this and I have been in the process of finding and backing up my data. My question had to do with the Advanced option under Windows Easy Transfer, which allows you select folders/files in addition to the standard set of folders to back up, which looks a lot like the backup utility available under DOS, which allowed you to select the specific files and folders to back up and once set up it was easy to do a backup whenever needed. However, the screen that is shown in the description is not what I get when I select Windows Easy Transfer. Thanks for your help
