My email is supposed to automatically filter spam, but it stays in my inbox and spam folder is empty.

I was told that my email (email address) would be filtered after a time of adjustment and that spam would be automatically moved to the spam folder. But it's been many months and spam still is only tagged as spam and stays in my inbox. My spam folder has nothing in it. Is this a mess-up in the email or can this be fixed?
